Portuguese is among the 10 most spoken languages in the world today, having more than 200 million speakers. It is the official language of Brazil (where it is spoken by almost the entire population), Portugal, Mozambique, Angola, Green Cape, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as Macau. It is the co-official language in East Timor and Macau, together with Tetum and Cantonese, respectively. We can still find Portuguese-speaking communities in Goa, Daman, Diu, Melaka in Malaysia, Ceylon's Arab Coast in Sri Lanka, in the Carib Territory in Dominica, and in several countries in other areas of the world. The Portuguese language originated in the Indo-European family, probably between the Tagus, the Douro, and the Guadiana rivers, around the 3rd century BC. The language used in Portugal today, known as Galician, is not the same as Portuguese, but is its closest relative. The oldest texts in Portuguese date back to the 12th century, the first being in the Calligraphy Keep, a document in which the Portuguese king bestows on the bishop of Coimbra, the lands of the Monastery of Santa Cruz in 1131.
